While some institutions are poised to secure positions due to pristine records and victories over formidable opponents, the landscape remains dynamic, with key spots up for grabs, and the post-conference championship week could usher in significant changes.
At present, the top four slots in the latest CFP ranking are occupied by Georgia, Michigan, Washington, and Florida State. These schools are currently undefeated, yet an additional four teams, each with just one loss, are in contention as the weekend approaches.
Following the selection process, the remaining programs will engage in two semifinal clashes – the Rose Bowl Game and the Sugar Bowl – scheduled for Jan. 1. Subsequently, the National Championship is slated for Jan. 8 in Houston.

Despite uncertainties about the complete field, the likelihood of No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Michigan securing CFP berths is remarkably high. The Bulldogs, having clinched back-to-back National Championships, maintain an unblemished 12-0 record before their showdown with No. 8 Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.
Although a defeat on Saturday doesn’t rule out Georgia from CFP contention, a triumph over the Crimson Tide would likely ensure their top-ranking status.

Similarly, Michigan, following a hard-fought victory over Ohio State in Week 13, is poised to remain among the final four teams. Head coach Jim Harbaugh, returning after a three-game suspension, leads the Wolverines against No. 16 Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game. A victory here would secure their spot in the semifinals alongside Georgia.
Securing the final two spots is a more arduous journey.
Washington is set to face off against No. 5 Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game, featuring a clash between two top-tier quarterbacks – the Ducks’ Bo Nix and the Huskies’ Michael Penix Jr. The winner is likely to secure a CFP berth, while the loser faces elimination.
Florida State, boasting a 12-0 record, faces a formidable challenge against No. 14 Louisville in the ACC Championship Game. However, the absence of standout quarterback Jordan Travis, sidelined due to a season-ending leg injury, poses a significant hurdle.
Backup Tate Rodemaker, stepping in for Travis, delivered a serviceable performance but underwhelmed in the Seminoles’ 24-15 win over Florida in Week 13. Despite uncertainties at the quarterback position, if Florida State maintains its undefeated streak after Saturday night’s game, a CFP spot remains a strong possibility.
